AD-HOC ANIMAL CONTROL COMMITTEE
MEETING MINUTES
MARCH 4, 2002
A meeting of the Chippewa County Board of Commissioners' Ad-Hoc Animal Control Committee was
held on Monday, March 4, 2002 at the Chippewa County Courthouse in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
Chairperson Dale called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m. with a quorum present.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Rita Dale, Chairperson, Debbie Green, Tim Dolehanty, Dave Carpenter,
Ann Trissel, Wendy Beaudoin-Zimmerman
MEMBERS ABSENT: Aaron Hopper, Cindy Anderson
OTHERS PRESENT: Earl Kay
Agenda Items
Chairperson Dale stated the purpose of this meeting was to review options for the animal shelter. Ideas
were presented as follows:
1. The former Northern Landscaping facility located on M-129 just south of Three Mile Road was
discussed. Committee members agreed this was an option worthy of further exploration. The
location was good, but an inspection of the site and the three buildings would need to be made.
The asking price would have to be negotiated downward.
2. A vacant lot currently owned by the County on Mackinac Trail south of Three Mile Road was
considered. Sewage disposal may be a problem in the area because of heavy clay soils. Another
county-owned site nearby has an abundance of gravel underground. Using the site for an animal
shelter may mean the gravel could not be removed.
3. The current animal shelter facility located on Spruce Street in the City of Sault Sainte Marie may
be workable with an addition to the building and a designated parking area. City ordinances
would have to be reviewed in order to assess site restrictions.
4. Commissioner Hopper suggested purchase of a building currently owned by the Economic
Development Corporation. This option was discussed at length, but was determined to be too
costly and labor intensive.
5. The Committee considered the former animal shelter location on Nine Mile Road. This option
was also ruled out because the building is not of an adequate size to accommodate our current
operation.
Committee members discussed a number of opportunities associated with a new or renovated facility.
Ann Trissel shared her experience touring many shelters and stressed the importance of using proper
building material in order to minimize odors.
The Committee agreed to convene again in the near future to finalize a recommendation to the Board of
Commissioners.
Adjourn
Hearing no other comments, Chairperson Dale declared the meeting adjourned at 3:23 p.m.
