A meeting of the Chippewa County Board of Commissioners’ Health and Social Services Committee was held on Monday, February 23, 2004 at the Chippewa County Courthouse in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Chairman Postula called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. with a quorum present.

MEMBERS PRESENT: Ted Postula, Chairman, Rita Dale and Earl Kay

MEMBERS ABSENT: None

OTHERS PRESENT: Tim Dolehanty, County Controller

Additions / Deletions to the Agenda

Chairman Postula called for additions or deletions to the agenda. Hearing none, the agenda was declared approved as presented.

Public Comments

Chairman Postula called for pubic comments. No public comments were offered.

Agenda Item: Medical Examiner Appointment and Contract

A copy of the County Medical Examiner statute was distributed to the Committee for review and consideration. It was noted that the Medical Examiner holds office for four years, but no formal Board action has occurred for some time. It was also noted that the statute permits the Board to designate the health officer as medical examiner.

The Committee discussed the history of this position. A letter naming Dr. Satish Chawla as deputy medical examiner, dated October 4, 2001, was reviewed. Commissioner Dale suggested sending a good faith letter to the hospital seeking input on this subject. It was agreed that the Controller should review the medical examiner situation and report back to the Committee.

Health Officer / Medical Director Contract

The Committee discussed the need for a formal agreement with the Health Officer / Medical Director. Past arrangements were discussed, but no written contract exists for this position. The Committee directed the Controller to work with the Health Department Finance Director and LMAS Administrator to develop an agreement that defines the duties and compensation for this position.
