Process to file an application for a marriage license

Michigan residents must apply in the county of residence of one of the applicants. Nonresidents must be married in the county where they make application.

If one of the applicants is a Chippewa County resident and the other is not, the Chippewa County resident must apply. The applicant must provide a Michigan driver's license or Michigan identification card, which reflects their current address.

Both applicants must be 18 years of age. Applicants 16 and 17 must have parental consent, a certified copy of the applicant's birth certificate, and a valid driver's license or state ID.

The license is valid for 33 days from date of application.

The fee is $20.00 for Chippewa County residents and $30.00 for out-of-state residents, payable at the time of application.

There is a three (3) day waiting period from the day you apply before the license may be picked up.

Social security numbers are required from both applicants. If you do not have a social security number, contact our office for further instructions.  Social security numbers are not open to the public.

If previously married, you must supply a certified copy of your divorce judgment unless divorced in Chippewa County.

Please call the County Clerk's office at (906) 635-6300 if you have further questions.
