The
County Clerk is elected for a four-year term and is responsible for keeping
records of births, deaths, assumed names, co-partnerships, military discharge
papers and issuing and filing marriage licenses. In addition, the Clerk
processes concealed pistol licenses, notary bonds, passport applications, and
veteran's peddlar permits. The Clerk serves as Clerk of the County Board of
Commissioners, Board of Canvassers, Jury Board and Gun Board. The Clerk is also
a member of the County Election Commission and the Plat Board.
The
County Clerk is the Clerk of the Circuit Court. Circuit Court handles felony
criminal cases, civil cases involving more than $25,000.00 and family court
records.
The County Clerk administers all election functions required by law. Part of
those duties include the supervision of all national, state, and local elections
and includes the training of all election workers in the County for those
communities with a population of under ten thousand. The Clerk is also
responsible for the administration of the Michigan Campaign Finance Reporting
Act for those candidates that file for office at the local level.
Birth Records
Process to Obtain a Birth Record
Under Michigan law, birth records are restricted documents, and a current
valid, photo identification is required in order to establish eligibility to
request and/or receive one (except for a birth record that is at least 100
years old). To protect you and the community from identity theft, we
require a copy of the applicant's photo identification to be presented along
with the application. Please see the Application form for identification
requirements.
Requesting a Birth Certificate by Mail
Please be advised when requesting a birth
certificate by mail you must supply the following information:
- Your request must be on 8 1/2 X 11
paper
- Your full name at birth
- Your birth date
- Both parents names (including your
mother's maiden name)
- A copy of your valid state I.D. or
Drivers License
- Your signature must be on the
request.
- A day time telephone number
- A stamped return envelope
Cost: $8.00 for 1 or $13.00 for two
of the same. Please make a check or money order payable to the
Chippewa County Clerk.
All information is needed to complete your
request, if a request is not complete you will not receive your certificate,
and a copy of your request will be returned to you. If you have any

Application for a Birth Record by Mail
Availability of Records
Birth records have been filed with this
office since 1869. BIRTH RECORDS ARE CONFIDENTIAL AND ARE NOT PUBLIC RECORD,
but certified copies of birth certificates are available to eligible persons
upon request. We try to send out birth requests received by mail the same
day or by the next business day. Birth records for newborn children are
usually available within three weeks from the birth date.
Relationship to Person on the Birth
Certificate
To obtain a certified copy of a birth
record, the applicant must indicate his or her relationship to the person
named on the certificate. Michigan law states that certified copies of birth
records can be issued only to the individual, the parent(s) named on the
record, an heir or legal guardian, or legal representative.
Heirs must provide date and place of death
and how they are related. Legal guardians must provide a copy of their legal
guardianship papers.
Fees
The minimum fee for a certified copy of a
birth record is $8.00 for the first copy and $5.00 for each additional copy
of the same record at the same time.
Death Records
Process to
obtain a copy of a death record.
Records are open to the public, no ID required. Records available: Deaths have
been recorded in Chippewa County from 1869 to present.
You
can view a death record during our research hours or purchase a certified copy
of it. The fee for a certified copy is $8.00 for the first copy, $5.00 for each
additional copy of the same record.
Marriage License
Process to obtain a copy of a marriage
license
The marriage license index lists all people who have applied
for a marriage license in Chippewa County. Not all marriage licenses are
used but they still appear on the marriage license application index.
Records are open to the public, no ID required. Records available: 1827 to
present.
You can view a marriage license during our research hours or purchase a
certified copy of it. The fee for a certified copy is $8.00 for the first
copy, $5.00 for each additional copy of the same record.
Process to file an application for a marriage license
Michigan residents must apply in the county of residence of one of the
applicants. Nonresidents must be married in the county where they make
application.
If
one of the applicants is a Chippewa County resident and the other is not,
the Chippewa County resident must apply. The applicant must provide a
Michigan driver's license or Michigan identification card, which reflects
their current address.
Both applicants must be 18 years of age. Applicants 16 and 17 must have
parental consent, a certified copy of the applicant's birth certificate, and
a valid driver's license or state ID.
The license is valid for 33 days from date of application.
The fee is $20.00 for Chippewa County residents and $30.00 for out-of-state
residents, payable at the time of application.
There is a three (3) day waiting period from the day you apply before the
license may be picked up.
Social security numbers are required from both applicants. If you do not
have a social security number, contact our office for further instructions.
Social security numbers are not open to the public.
If
previously married, you must supply a certified copy of your divorce
judgment unless divorced in Chippewa County.

Assumed Name
Process to file an Assumed Name
and Co-Partnership
A sole proprietor and a general
partnership conducting or transacting business in this state
under a name other than the real name of the person(s) must file
a Certificate of Assumed Name or Certificate of Co-Partnership.
Assumed Name Certificates must be
filed in the county where the business is located and may also
be filed in each county where you are conducting or transacting
business. If the business address is not in Chippewa, a copy of the Assumed Name Certificate that has been
filed in the county where the business address is located must
be provided at the time of filing.
Co-Partnership Certificates must
only be filed in the county where the business address is
located.
We cannot accept assumed names
that are similar to another name already on file.
The filing fee is $10.00 and is
valid for a period of 5 years. The County Clerk's office will
notify businesses by mail when it is time to renew the filing.

able to withstand 225 degrees F).

payable to "Passport Services" in the amount of $75.00.
For individuals under the age of sixteen the fee required is
$60.00 made payable to "Passport Services". Our processing
fee is $30.00 regardless of age. These amounts MUST be paid
separately. If you choose to expedite your Passport, there
is an additional fee of $60.00. Please Note: The fees indicated
must be in U.S. Funds.
